Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, George Town
This mansion was built in the late 19th century by a Hakka millionaire industrialist who moved his base from China to Penang in the early 1890s. The 'Blue Mansion' as it is sometime called is a typical mansion of the rich Chinese merchants of Penang, built during that period of the Straits Settlement.
Cheong was a Mandarin in China who later became the Qing Government Consul-General in Singapore. His business empire included shipping, trading, opium, agriculture and mining.
The mansion is rich in superb workmanship that is typical of Chinese craftsmanship of that era. The mansion had 5 courtyards and 38 bedrooms. Today it is also a heritage hotel and is a winner of the UNESCO Asia Pacific Award in 2000 for conservation.
